Hair Transplant Surgery: FUT vs FUE Reno, NV
hair loss

The hair on your head can be a sign of youth, beauty and vitality. Whether you are a male or female, the fullness of your hair can have a drastic influence on your overall appearance. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to retain a full head of hair. Hair loss can occur for many different reasons, including the natural aging process. For those who are weary of trying hair growth products and supplements with disappointing results, we can offer a more effective and longer-lasting solution with hair transplant surgery.

Hair transplant techniques have vastly improved over recent decades, with less invasive techniques and more natural-looking results. However, when choosing this procedure for yourself, it is important to understand the two basic methods of hair transplant surgery: follicular unit transfer (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). At Avance Hair Transplant, we proudly offer both.

FUT vs FUE Transplant Techniques

All hair transplant surgery involves taking donor hair and “transplanting” it into balding areas of the scalp. However, there are two main ways of achieving this. The key difference for the patient is in the incisions. In FUE, the incisions can be more discreet because they are small circular incisions that are dispersed throughout the donor area of the scalp. In FUT, hair is transplanted using a single, long incision (strip method) in the middle of the donor area or back of the scalp.

Follicular Unit Transfer

The difference in incision for these hair transplant surgeries is based on their distinction in how the healthy hair follicles are harvested. The FUT method aims to remove a group of 1-4 follicular units from one thin strip of donor hair it is dissected and prepared for implantation. That equates to nearly 4,000 hair follicles in a single session! This method can extract approximately twice as many follicles as the FUE approach and allows the surgeon to implant the highest quality grafts. Less donor area of the scalp can also be used compared to the more dispersed FUE transplant. However, patients must have good quality donor hair and sufficient scalp elasticity for this procedure.

Follicular Unit Extraction

In contrast to the follicular unit transfer, the FUE hair transplant method uses a more precise and direct extraction of each follicular unit from the back and sides of the scalp. The FUE method is considered more advanced and often relies on special instruments and technology.

Many patients prefer FUE, as it is known as a more efficient procedure with faster results, less downtime and less detectable scars. In fact, eliminating the risk of linear scarring in the back of the head is a driving factor for many patients who choose FUE hair transplant surgery. This ensures you can wear any haircut and hairstyle after this minimally-invasive procedure.

At Avance Hair Transplant, we can help you choose between FUE and FUT hair transplantation based on your specific type of hair loss and your projected goals for hair restoration. Regardless of which method you choose, you can trust that we are equipped to help you achieve the natural and confident results you deserve in hair transplant surgery.
